The concept of tassel...Thank you for this insight! The concept of tassels and "fringe" on garments is something I have encountered in my own research among ancient texts. So far, I have not totally arrived at the level of understanding which I am seeking (there are papyri examples with cryptic mathematical word problems which reference 'fringe' and 'garment' and ancient wisdom literature offering cautionary tales against 'skimming' or misrepresenting quality/dimensions received (artisans/jewelers/chefs), and keeping the (fringe) remnants of materials/food that belong to the boss/king/god/other person or entity).
Your blog post, which I have (by G*d's grace) stumbled upon, adds another open gate toward a better and richer understanding in my research. Your footnotes are the cherry-on-top. Thank you, thank you.
-TinaAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1131907817946868673.post-69642975254795017882022-11-30T09:55:30.437-08:002022-11-30T09:55:30.437-08:00Ulaede0col_re-1989 Thomas Newman Best

That may be a better explanation than your earlier proposal, but it's hardly a good explanation if you are loyal to tradition. Likewise, suggesting that the Torah didn't really mean that people for lived hundreds of years, it was just hyperbole. Well, that's convenient: if something in the Pentateuch seems strange to you, it must be made up, just legend.
If you are willing to cast off the written and oral traditions on a whim because you haven't figured out a mechanism how it would work, then you certainly won't have any problems resolving any other apparent peculiarities or difficulties that you can come up with. As someone who has been on both sides of this (I have been mocked and I have debunked), I think that crass and mean-spirited terms like "bozo" cross a line and make me lose respect for the author who uses them. You are right that they can be "cold water in the face," which is how you took it, but they can also cause doubling down, because they make us angry, hurt, and defensive, thus accomplishing the opposite of what the author ostensibly wants (though perhaps he just wants a target to make fun of). From just a few months after he seized power he ran a brutal dictatorship. He gets credit for increasing literacy rates, and for not having the country be a total basket case the way some Communist nations did, but that is about it. He shouldn't even get credit for Cuba's good healthcare because Cuba had a really good healthcare system before he took power.

Castro's death should not be mourned by anyone who values human rights and freedom.

Hopefully none of the fears regarding Trump will come to pass, but we must be diligent. But it should be noted that Trump has often expressed admiration for dictators, especially Vladimir Putin. Some of his rhetoric seems to be a copy of Mussolini and he is known to have read Hitler's speeches.

Finally, it should be noted that back in the 1990s Trump broke the Cuba embargo -- something that potentially carried a 20 year prison sentence -- in order to pursue business opportunities with Castro. Unfortunately, Trump was never prosecuted. We need to monitor Trump's activities closely.
